While undergoing restoration in the 19th century, startling discoveries of what lay underneath the church were made by the Irish priest Father Mullooley: a long-forgotten early Christian Basilica with early tomb fragments, mosaics and frescoes. Continuing excavations revealed even earlier structures beneath the church, including the remains of Roman houses and an a chamber dedicated to the religious rites of the Persian god Mithras.
