Not enough time to visit the ruins of Pompeii? Join our guide for a tour of the ancient Roman port town of Ostia Antica, considered to be as important archeologically as Pompeii, but much less known and visited. Our guide will take you on a short train trip to this beautiful and evocative archaeological park canopied with Umbrella Pines and Cypresses.
At this enormous site you will see the remarkable remains of a city from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD that was completely covered by sand due to its proximity to the ocean, and thus was remarkably preserved. Surviving remains date back as far as the 4th century BC and by the 3rd century BC, Ostia was a very important port town, naval base and commercial centre for Rome, organising and supplying vast amounts of food and merchandise to the capitol.
At this lovely site you will see beautiful mosaic floors still in place at the many public baths and commercial trade centres, statues, temples, apartment buildings, cemeteries, a restaurant, and a beautifully preserved theatre that is used even today for outdoor concerts.
Enjoy the scenic park, learn about the history of the area with your guide who will show you the highlights of this dense treasure trove of ancient life, and have lunch at the local park cafe.
